Sunnydale is the new Azeroth

Word has it that Fox has teamed up with The Multiverse Network to develop a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (a genre catapaulted into popularity by World of Warcraft) based on Joss Whedon’s popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise.  Players will be able to interact with the “Buffyverse” as it was after the series finale, with Buffy leading an army of vampire slayers acting as a supernatural “paramilitary unit.” No in-game footage is available at present, but a beta version will be released before the end of the year.

There is a major trade-off taking place as far as Joss Whedon franchises are concerned, unfortunately.  Development of this new game has effectively cancelled all work on the previously-announced Firefly MMORPG, with its release date postponed indefinitely.  Still, it is possible that success with Whedon’s more well-known and monetarily successful franchise will enable greater use of resources for production of the eventual Firefly release.

  1. Wonder what took so long, I think most people have forgotten about Buffy buy now. Although Vampires aways seem to be popular and ever more so with the Twilight books which will soon be made into movies.

  2. Holy crap! I knew nothing about either one of those things! I kind of think I would enjoy playing a Firefly MMORPG more than a Buffy one, but I’m ridiculously excited for either!
